Cuisine Scene: All Day Breakfast
Long Beach loves breakfast, and good brunch spots are in high demand. However, sometimes we don’t want to wait until the weekend for brunch, or even wait until morning for breakfast. If you need waffles on the regular or a late night omelet, here are a few places where breakfast is served all day.
THE BREAKFAST BAR
The Breakfast Bar (70 Atlantic Ave / 3404 E 4th St) has two locations, and both serve their breakfast menu during all their open hours (6AM to 2PM on weekdays, and 6AM to 3PM on weekends). Don’t be alarmed by the servers wearing “Day Drinker” t-shirts, just go with it and enjoy your bloody mary or bellini (and yes, the shirts are available for purchase). For a perfectly balanced brunch, order Uncle Marcee’s Omelet Casserole to get your savory fix, and a plate of Dad’s Favorite Lemon Cake Pancakes for a sweet treat.
BAKE N BROIL
A local favorite in Bixby Knolls, Bake N Broil (3697 Atlantic Ave) was opened in 1965 by Roger and Carol Jongewaard. Known for their baked goods, this family-owned and operated restaurant sells out of their popular pies every Thanksgiving. The breakfast menu served 8AM to 3PM (2PM on Sundays) includes diner classics like chicken fried steak, banana nut pancakes topped with whipped cream, and fresh-baked coffee cake.
PARK PANTRY THE ORIGINAL
A table on the sidewalk patio at Park Pantry (2104 E Broadway) offers excellent people watching and a scenic view of Bixby Park. Open daily from 7AM to 3PM, this neighborhood diner serves breakfast throughout that period, including a lox and bagel sandwich, cinnamon roll French toast, and huevos rancheros. After breakfast, you are steps away from the beach for a stroll along the bluffs or on the sand.
HOF’S HUT
In the 1940s, Harold Hofman opened Hof’s Hut (2147 Bellflower Blvd), a burger stand serving 15 cent Hofburgers, on the beach in Long Beach. Today, the restaurant has three locations, and you can order breakfast from morning until they close (9PM Sundays through Thursdays, and 10PM Fridays and Saturdays). Choices include traditional American breakfasts, like three-egg omelets and buttermilk pancakes, as well as Breakfast Pot Pie and pastries and muffins baked in-house, daily.
THE PAN
Breakfast is served all day until closing at 9PM at The Pan (15 W Del Amo Blvd), where the food is all about comfort. Menu items at this diner-style breakfast and brunch hotspot include shrimp and grits, bananas Foster French toast, a crab cake benedict, and a slate of indulgent pancakes dishes, including guavas and cream or cinnamon roll pancakes. Wash it all down with homemade horchata, or relax with a bloody mary or mimosa.
