Women-Owned Businesses in Long Beach's Retro Row
Retro Row is one of the most popular spots in Long Beach for dining, shopping and generally having a good time with friends and family. And some of the most popular spots on Retro Row are women-owned businesses that not only help to set the vibe on Fourth Street but also, in one case, played a major part in Fourth Street becoming Retro Row.
ALDER & SAGE/ART DU VIN
Alder & Sage (366 Cherry Ave) is the creation of Kerstin Kansteiner, someone who knows a thing or two about cool, welcoming spaces. She previously owned the much-loved Portfolio Coffeehouse and Berlin Bistro and still owns Art du Vin (2027 E Fourth St) the natural wine bar connected to the Art Theatre. Alder & Sage serves top notch coffee and pastries along with full breakfast, lunch, and dinner menus. Enjoy your repast amid an interior of natural light and alder wood, or find a spot on the back patio, a manicured outdoor space that includes cozy fire pits, where the vibe is familiar and delicious.
LOLA’S MEXICAN CUISINE/THE SOCIAL LIST
Two of Retro Row’s most popular spots are owned by Brenda Navarro and her husband Luis Navarro. Lola’s Mexican Cuisine (2030 E Fourth St), opened in 2008, is a mix of traditional Mexican food with a progressive flare served in a warm, family atmosphere. As one of the city’s most beloved restaurants, Lola’s opened a second location in Bixby Knolls (4140 Atlantic Ave) in 2016. On Retro Row across from Lola’s is The Social List (2105 E Fourth St), a tavern-like eatery that brings together great food–small plates, seasonal sandwiches–craft beer, wine and spirits in a cool, indoor/outdoor environment.
PIGEON’S ROLLER SKATES
Pigeon’s Roller Skate Shop (2148 E 4th St) is the hub of Long Beach’s passionate roller skating community. Owner Shayna “Pigeon” Meikle opened her shop in 2013, staffing it with experienced skaters who provide knowledge and resources for all levels; beginner to seasoned roller skaters of all ages. They are also experts at fitting and creating custom skates. Pigeon’s caters to all styles of roller skating from recreation, dance, roller derby, park, fitness and inline skating.
MEOW
It can be argued that Kathleen Schaaf’s Meow (2210 E Fourth St) vintage clothing store is the reason Retro Row exists. Schaaf opened Meow in 1986 and its collection of Old School Cool–bellbottoms to cat-eyed glasses, saddle shoes to graphic T’s–quickly made it a destination shopping spot, soon to be followed by other retro retail that together founded Retro Row. Not only does Schaaf sell clothing and accessories out of her location, but also she’s a main outfitter for numerous nostalgic Hollywood productions like That 70’s Show, Stranger Things and Mad Men.
TARANTELLA ON 4TH
Tarantella On 4th (2120 E. Fourth St)–formerly, La Tarantella Osteria–is simply one of the most charming eateries in the city. Owned by Megan Canales and husband Carlos, it features traditional Italian delicacies served either within the narrow footprint of the restaurant’s interior, or their outdoor space accessed by walking past its bustling kitchen. Arranged on a patch of small rocks, tables are surrounded by trees and flowers while under cafe lights. There is a constant hum of conversation, laughter and, more often than not, a musician performing at just the right decibel level.
