SoCal’s Weeklong Summer Art Spectacle Begins June 22: Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei 2024
Long Beach, CA – May 29, 2024 – Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei is back and bigger than ever, with a new lineup of live mural paintings and artistic installations from over 25 artists from five countries. Now in its ninth edition, the weeklong free outdoor art festival will transform the city into a vibrant canvas of artistic expression, uniting artists, locals and visitors in celebration of creativity, culture and community.
Scheduled to take place from June 22–29, the Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei 2024 festival inspires the international art community, SoCal locals, and travelers alike with a spectacle of live mural painting, interactive art installations, music performances and engaging workshops. This year's event aims to build on the success of previous editions, fostering a deeper connection between art and the diverse communities that call Long Beach home.
For founder of Long Beach Walls Julia Huang, CEO of Intertrend and board member of event organizer Creative Class Collective, “Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei are much more than a time and a place to enjoy incredible bigger-than-life art. It’s an event that aims to make a lasting impact on our community and in the lives of young artists. As a platform for discussion of what’s important to youth today—from the things that inspire and bring joy to the issues they fear and ponder—each mural has space for joy and sadness. With each inch of their artwork, we gain insight into their feelings and what can bring us together as a community. We are honored to support them as they paint a new future for our city.”
Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei 2024 will feature a lineup of renowned local, national, and international artists, each bringing their unique style and perspective to the streets of Long Beach, who were selected from over 1,600 candidates. The 2024 artist lineup includes:
Andrea Wan, a Hong Kong-born artist based in Vancouver, B.C., who specializes in ink drawings and mural projects. She uses various mediums to convey her stream of consciousness. Her art explores the interconnectedness of nature and the human psyche, posing thought-provoking and introspective questions about the human experience.
SakoAsko, a Colombian artist and illustrator whose work questions what motivates each of us to make critical choices or to postpone them indefinitely. He has a deep faith in image-making as a medium to uncover a vast internal universe beyond the human eye.
Detour, a versatile creative who specializes in large-scale public art, interactive visuals, portraiture, immersive spaces, and creative direction. He aims to produce work that lies at the intersection of art and innovation.
Off the Walls: This year, Long Beach’s Walls will walk, talk, drive, ride, and dance!
The event promises to be the most interactive ever with off-the-walls activities starting June 22 with a projection mapping activation from Brendan Monroe leveraging the Queen Mary as its canvas. Viewers can grab a digital souvenir passport to view mural locations and read background on each artist, see a Long Beach Transport system bus with wrapped designs from artist Narsiso Martinez, ride bikes through the city to see 15 murals, attend artist talks, and much more.
"We are thrilled to bring Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei back for another exciting year," said Cassandra Leeman, executive director of Creative Class Collective. "Long Beach has a rich artistic heritage and Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei is about celebrating that legacy while embracing the future of art in our community. We invite everyone to join us for a week of inspiration, creativity and connection."
With the theme "Platform for Youth," this year's festival ignites a passion for mural art in the next generation by fostering greater accessibility through ongoing mural partnerships with Renaissance High School of the Arts, which has been expanded to empower young artists at Richard Browning High School and Lowell Elementary.
In addition to showcasing established artists, Long Beach Walls and Art Renzei 2024 will provide a platform for emerging talents to shine. Through collaborative mural projects and mentorship opportunities, the event seeks to empower the next generation of creatives and nurture a culture of inclusivity and innovation. The general public is invited to participate as well and can volunteer to help beautify the community – see more details here.
