Mario Andretti's name is as synonymous with racing as any name in American racing history.
Andretti is known not only for his wins, but also for his versatility as a driver.
He competed and won driving stock cars, midgets, sprint cars, IndyCars, drag racers, sport cars and Formula One. His career began driving a 1948 Hudson Hornet Sportsman stock car on a oval dirt track in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. He had 21 modified stockcar wins in 46 races in 1960 and 1961. He went on to capture four IndyCar championships and became the first driver to win IndyCar races in four decades and then made it five decades! He remains the only driver to win the Indianapolis 500, Daytona 500 and Formula One World Championship. He is the last American to have won a Formula One race (1978), the only race driver to be named United States Driver of the year in three decades, and is one of only three drivers to win races on road courses, paved ovals and dirt tracks in one season, a feat he accomplished four times. Andretti captured the Long Beach Grand Prix four times, in 1977, 1984, 1985 and 1987
